Our celebratory programs this summer open with music for winds by Stravinsky and Mozart, combining the classicism of the 18th and 20th centuries in a bubbly concert worthy of a champagne celebration. Oliver Knussen’s music for A.A. Milne’s beloved Winnie the Pooh will feature the stratospheric soprano Delaram Kamareh.
Continuing our anniversary party, we present an intoxicating program of night music from Salzburg and Mexico City. Gabriela Ortiz’s Baalkah conjures up the pre-Colombian world in a masterpiece which brings this past world to musical life, featuring soprano Ayana Haviv. The evening’s festivities open with one of Mozart’s most beloved works, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, and finishes with the erotic nocturnal work by Schoenberg, Verklärte Nacht.
Other highlights this summer include a commemoration of Benjamin Britten’s centennial with works for tenor and harp, combined with colorful compositions by Henze and Janácek. Music by Wagner, Reger and Brahms round out this 20th anniversary summer.

String Sextet “Verklärte Nacht”
A dream concert in every sense of the word, this program intoxicates with night music from elegant Salzburg combined with the New World of Mayan astrology, concluding with an erotic nocturnal work from fin de siècle Vienna. Gabriela Ortiz’s Baalkah conjures up the pre-Colombian world of Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and Tulum in a masterpiece which brings this past world to musical life, featuring our soaring soprano Ayana Haviv. Richard Wagner
Album leaf for Betty Schott
Max Reger
Quintet for Clarinet & Strings, Op. 146
Johannes Brahms
Trio for Violin, Horn & Piano, Op. 40
A true Wagnerian rarity opens this concert. Composed soon after finishing his monumental Ring Cycle, Wagner took a few moments to compose this “thank you” note for solo piano to his publisher, Betty Schott. Music worthy of a rich German dessert wine, the Clarinet Quintet of Reger, is his last and most beloved piece of chamber music, an outpouring of melodic warmth rarely equaled that will feature Southwest’s extraordinary clarinetist Jim Foschia. To
top off this interesting concert, another member of the wind family creates a new sound with the heroic Horn Trio of Johannes Brahms.

Benjamin Britten
Eight Folk Song Arrangements
A Birthday Hansel
Hans Werner Henze
L’autunno for Wind Quintet
Leoš Janácek
Mladi for Wind Sextet
Our final concert is an evening of music by three of the greatest opera composers of the 20th century: Benjamin Britten, Hans Werner Henze and Leoš Janácek. The centennial of Benjamin Britten is celebrated with two wonderful harp and voice works with tenor Daniel Chaney and harpist Alison Bjorkedal. Henze’s L’autunno is an Italianate opera for winds featuring a cornucopia of instruments joining the traditional wind quintet, including piccolo, alto flute, oboe d’amore, bass clarinet, contrabassoon and even a Wagner tuba. The summer concludes with the wise remembrances of childhood from Czech master Leoš Janácek.
