Highlights of the
2013 Summer Festival at The Huntington

The 20th anniversary of the Summer Festival at The Huntington was a great success, thanks to all of you who supported and attended! This summer season also received great reviews from the LA Times, Crescenta Valley Weekly, and more!

Review: Starlight sets tone for Southwest Chamber Music's program

By Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times Music Critic. July 29, 2013

"Night invites magic and mystery and, well, music. That is particularly true outdoors, and it was to the nocturnal that Southwest Chamber Music turned for the second of its Summer Festival at the Huntington programs on Sunday, which featured the excellent Lyris Quartet. These concerts are held on a veranda of the Huntington Library, where the acoustic is intimate. Lawn seating behind a makeshift stage is also available, the music a little further away and the sky a little closer."

Review: Southwest Chamber Music performs Wagner, Reger, and Brahms

By Ted Ayala, Crescenta Valley Weekly. August 15, 2013

"There are times when one's trust in the progress of humanity is pricked by doubts and skepticism; whether, despite all our gadgets and undeniable technological splendor, we've really evolved much from our primitive, cave-dwelling ancestors. But it's a sign that, perhaps, we've come a long way after all when the music of Brahms and Wagner can now sit side-by-side as it did last weekend at the Southwest Chamber Music concerts at the Huntington Library."

Review: Southwest Chamber Music @ The Huntington, 8/11

By Daniel Corral, auscultations. August 22, 2013

"On August 11, I had the pleasure of attending one of Southwest Chamber Music's Summer Festival concerts on the peristylar loggia of the Huntington Art Gallery. I had spent that afternoon on a panel for the Society of Experimental Musicians, discussing the importance of context in music. As we entered the Huntington estate and boarded the loggia, it occurred to me that there may not be a more appropriate context in the Los Angeles area to hear chamber music by the likes of Wagner, Reger, and Brahms."

Review: Southwest Chamber Music Celebrates the Britten Centennial

By Theodore Bell, Culture Spot LA. September 4, 2013

"Tenor Jon Lee Keenan and harpist Alison Bjorkedal were brilliant in their performances of Britten's Eight Folk Song Arrangements
(1976) and A Birthday Hansel (Op. 92, 1976).  Bjorkedal is among the finest harpists in Los Angeles, and her performance was superb. She and Keenan were expressive and matched perfectly to the character of the songs."
